I’ve gradually become aware of a new wave of producers who are skilfully re-contextualising samples in a way that goes beyond just lazily putting a heavier kick-drum behind a loop from an old disco record. People like the The Revenge, OOFT! and the output of the 6th Borough Project (especially the releases on Instruments Of Rapture) have all been putting out these updated slow disco groovers (most of them a lot slower than 120bpm) that are cleverly re-working samples into extremely infectious jams. This slow burner from the Tornado Never Dies EP, works itself into a mid-tempo frenzy using some cunning guitar licks and vocal snippets with a breakdown that’s bound to please dancefloors wherever it’s dropped. Whilst Be My Ladyboy is my favourite cut, the two other tracks on the flip side are not merely there to make up the numbers, the title cut, Tornado Never Dies continues in a similar vein and The RL DL is more uptempo but still employs a decent vocal sample.
