Blur’s first hit way back in ’91 but here in stripped down remixed form, part of an assemblage of releases that seemed to be part of the ‘indie dance’ scene (or ‘alternative dance’ according to wikipedia), taking influence from the exploding dance scene that was then coursing through the UK. The vocals erased except for the chorus, the organ pushed more to the forefront, the funky drumming more prominent and akin to that used on “Fools Gold” by The Stone Roses. This came out when I was in the sixth form at school and I can remember someone coming into the social hut having just bought the original twelve, slapping it on the cheap dirty stereo we had in there and cranking it up for a positive reception.

Back in the early 80s my dad was a single man about town again, down at the nightclubs and discos at the weekends and must’ve been a bit of a soul boy. He was fond of this tune, he had it on a different release to the one below but always played this track; it subsequently ‘fell’ into my collection and err, was got ruined in The Great Mouldy Record Storage Disaster (sorry dad, I’ll get it on a mix for you).

Anyhow, I’ve tracked down and bought it on a superior one-sided pressing and here it is for you. A really apt title, this is the ideal soundtrack to a late night/early morning drive around London. Maybe you’re on your way home from the nightclub with your girl or just out ‘cos you’re an insomniac, whatever, I’m sure all the graveyard shift radio djs back then would have this in their playlists.

Was on a stag night yesterday; all day, evening and crawled in this morning. I’m suffering now and this is a fitting tune as any as to negotiate my way through the fog of a hangover that’s currently assaulting my brain. I know of Floyd Cramer as my dad frequently used to play “On The Rebound” to me which was a number one hit here in the UK in 1961, so I took a chance and bought this album from a seller on eBay having already purchased other stuff from him. One to play at the end of the night as you cry into your beer with your date having gone disastrously wrong, hence the ‘Last Date’ you’ll have with that particular lady.
