Blur’s first hit way back in ’91 but here in stripped down remixed form, part of an assemblage of releases that seemed to be part of the ‘indie dance’ scene (or ‘alternative dance’ according to wikipedia), taking influence from the exploding dance scene that was then coursing through the UK. The vocals erased except for the chorus, the organ pushed more to the forefront, the funky drumming more prominent and akin to that used on “Fools Gold” by The Stone Roses. This came out when I was in the sixth form at school and I can remember someone coming into the social hut having just bought the original twelve, slapping it on the cheap dirty stereo we had in there and cranking it up for a positive reception.

Albert Hoffman RIP

From wikipedia:
The band were unique, even in the 60’s, in that they played most of their live shows and recorded their albums while on LSD

Not familiar with psychedelic rock, my brief brushes with it confined to viewing the “Pidgeon Toed Orange Peel” scene from the Clint Eastwood flick, Coogan’s Bluff and eating some mouldy rye bread. In these cases, when you have a whole genre of music that is unfamiliar, you need some guidance in the form of a huge compilation by an esteemed expert in the field and in this case you can do no wrong by getting the 4 CD box set of Nuggets – Original Artyfacts From The First Psychedelic Era 1965-68. Get it and freak out.

DJ MIX: Zyron – Mellow Dream State
9th April, 2008 | 70 views

This was a winning mix in the Discogs Mix Tournament and deservedly so. Although I didn’t like all the tracks on this mix and not convinced the mix title accurately reflects what the mix is about, it’s out-and-out eclecticism and the transitions between the disparate styles are just amazing, e.g. Kraftwerk into U2 plus Alan Vega into the B-52′s Queen Of Las Vegas which prompted me to buy the album it’s from.
