Haven’t posted a ‘classic mix’ for some time and I’ll continue the atmospheric vibes with this mix I ripped some time ago from an original cassette that I bought back in the early 90s. The flow of this mix is incredible, it’s still ‘ambient’ in my opinion despite consisting of some techno/trance tracks; for example no.07, which to my ears sounds like some American Indians chanting happy birthday! The only track I recognise is the Dave Angel one that I have but layered and weaved throughout are field recordings and tv documentary samples from whomever mixed this up, unless they themselves are part of the tracks being used, I just can’t be sure?! Many a time, I’ve put this on and drifted off into hypnagogic states of conciousness where the music has shaped whatever my minds eye conjures up for entertainment. If you have access to a quiet location with facilities to listen to music, preferably reclined, for just over ninety minutes then go indulge your senses and report back with tales of phantasmagoria.

Know any of the tracks? Please leave a comment and I’ll update the tracklisting. Keen to ID nos.20 & 22 so I can liberate them into my clutches, MWAH-HA-HA-HAAA!

Like alot of musical genres that you may not be that familiar with, there’s so much music out there that, whilst you know that there must be tracks that you’ll probably like, you haven’t got the time to find ‘em and buy all the other music you normally do! That’s why finding a mix like this is gold dust; an expert in the field offers up a set that cuts through all the BS and lays down something that you instantly understand. A superb selection that gets played regularly at Chukkle Towers; would love to get hold of some of these sevens especially all the Brickwall riddim ones.

DJ MIX: LTJ Bukem – Mellow
17th June, 2008 | 1,240 views

One of my favourite mixes, period; it’s been part of my life for so long that it’s like a family member. Bought from a small shop that sold trendy ‘club wear’ in Chelmsford where I studied, that also sold mixtapes. We’ll forget about the baggy zebra-stripe Gio Goi shorts that I spent forty quid on which made me look like a clown; the guys who ran it were real clubheads and had good connections for some of the best mixtapes around, both nationally known djs and local ones. It’s fortuitous that I managed to rip the cassette to the computer and burn onto cd before it wore out and snapped which was an unfortunate circumstance that befell another prized deep house mix that belonged to ck. That mix (which was held in as high regard as the Bukem one) was by Dean Savonne; a victim of it’s excellence, chewed up by the car stereo.

It became an obsession to identify and then hunt down and buy all the tracks on this Bukem mix, only one left but it’s taken over ten years to get to this stage. The mixing is tight, transitions quick. No long snooze-a-thon mixes here, an average of three minutes a track and the next is being seamlessly blended in. Having listened to this mix hundreds of times, I’m biased but it’s all killer no filler; you could not get a better overview of what deep house sounded like in ‘91/’92. If I had to choose, my favourite tracks would be the Masters At Work, QX-1 and M.C.J. releases; the M.C.J. one especially, I didn’t know what the track was until a few years ago when someone ID’ed it on a forum. I’ve hosted this mix online since 2003 and it’s been downloaded thousands of times, tracks from here will definitely be featured by themselves on this blog in the future.

DJ MIX: Dave Lee’s Disco Mix
16th June, 2008 | 79 views

A mix of disco, funnily enough, although there are a couple of other changes of tempo and flavours lurking within of a more soulful and funky leaning. This mix opened my eyes to a whole new world of disco glitter… and wallet-stretching rare tunes to attempt to find and purchase. I mean, Dave Lee (aka Joey Negro) put together some scarce disco nuggets on this two hour mix; didn’t matter to him, ‘cos he’s already got them! I think alot of them are his own edits and he throws a few samples over the top of some tracks as well, like the spoken word bits over Gino Soccio. I broke my own ceiling on what I thought I would ever spend on a single record getting a rare disco mix of Gladys Knight And The Pips. I’ve seen original copies of the Ashford & Simpson’s “One More Try” go for over £300 on eBay, far in excess of what I would or could pay, so made do with a bootleg until I find the original for tuppence in a charity shop.

Luckily even though this mix is from 2004, the wonderful chaps at milkaudio.com are still hosting it. Be advised that it is a fairly low quality RealAudio streaming file, I’ve also uploaded it to TipTop.
