Released at the end of 2008 however I didn’t get my copy until a couple of months ago; hopefully there’s still some floating around but if you see one, jump on it. Apparently they also come with a cd single of the same tracks, although mine didn’t. Prepare to pay over the odds because it’s a piece of vinyl pressed and released in Japan but worth it for this single track, with the other three left way, way behind. This composition has an exquisite gentleness that makes you forget you’re listening to a four-on-the-floor house track with the off-beat repeated melody. Can’t help but wish it went on for longer, extended to cover a whole side – a soundtrack to dance under a starlit night to, with an approaching dawn infiltrating the blackness on the horizon.

First blog post of a complete tune for some time but I had to drop this soul bomb as it deservedly appears to be blowing up all over the place and I feel like adding a small amount of momentum whilst it’s still fresh (although admittedly I am quite late to the party as this has been out for R2 Records for a few weeks and was apparently out as a 7″ even before that). Deep but not quite at the pace of even slower deep house jams; soulful due to main sample it takes from an early eighties boogie number and re-translates into a new context plus damn tight production. Disseminating the Radio version here but both the Dub and the other track Shangrila, are on the money. Props to ck yet again for bringing this track to my attention – tastemaker! If he ever shifts his ass to write on his own blog, I’d have nothing new to put up.

The whole track is built round a chunk of a song with the same name by Real To Reel, it’s probably only fair that they get some love as well. Since I have a fondness for eighties groove jams and recognise their influence on many of the other records that I’ve got, I think I’ll be needing a copy of this on black wax at some point.

This track has been played by more than one presenter on the EstimuloShow which is testament to it’s strength and it deserves a post in it’s own right. Released at the tail end of 2008, it’s a sleeper that gets better with repeated listens and it still widely available now. Like drinking that ‘extra’ glass of wine, it brings intoxication to the ears, a tapestry of swirling sounds that sweeps you up on a magic carpet ride into that perfect world that few tracks conjure up. Nor should the lushness of this track overshadow the other two tracks by Ron Trent and Trinidadian Deep, which in themselves still make this release worth buying. Seek and buy on sight!

Continuing with the deepness, if not some of the dreaminess of the previous post. If asked to give the names of some outstanding deep house releases of the past few years, this would definitely be one of them. Released in 2006, this is an outstanding début for Hugo Giner, nothing wasted as the flip side is just as essential. Definitely a producer to keep tabs on for future releases.

Weekend before last I was at ck’s and he dropped this audio bomb on my ear lobes. Sounding like Mtume had decided to reform and release new material, ck introduced me to Dâm-Funk’s world. Ck and Keith have specialised more into hiphop than I ever have but their tastes mean they acquire material like this, boogie funk or modern-soul (whatever you want to call it), which I needs to get me into and stock up on.  It’s got that West Coast L.A. early eighties vibe thang goin’ on, totally nails it and I’m saying that despite not even visiting the States, let alone Los Angeles. On the flip side, you have the more uptempo but equally retro-sounding Galactic Fun, bringing to mind the productions of the Belgium outfit Spirit Catcher who forge a similar path with a love of eighties synths but more from a house angle.

Dâm purrrdy sleeve as well; released earlier this year but still widely available and h-h-hot, so grab a slice of this boogie pie and support the artist. Looking forward to checking out his forthcoming long player on Stones Throw in the new year.

ck’s all over it – he also played me this promo vid Dâm-Funk put together to publicize his Funkmosphere parties in L.A. – check out the sassy eighties vibezzz. When I eventually get to visit the States and hit L.A. I’ll definitely be visiting to hear all the black wax original pressings, analogue goodness, and to cut some shapes on the floor.

A slight departure from the norm in that this is currently unreleased; heard it on the digital radio station that is BBC 6Music a few weeks ago. I was enjoying a racy Friday evening at home listening to Tom Robinson’s show as he was laying down an audio soundtrack for those of us not getting smashed out of our brains in pubs/bars the length and breadth of the country in the traditional British end-of-week ritual. Stations like this keep me informed of contemporary non-electronic music so I can give the illusion of being ‘down with the kids’ and for that I am grateful. On first hearing this song, I thought it was new material by José González; however this is an amazingly simple tune that has depths as deep as a Scottish loch. From his forthcoming album Home, which is available on vinyl in limited quantities to pre-order from the online retailer Boomkat, please buy them all but leave one for me. (**Update** Also available from the online store Juno as at 21st November)

If I ever get around to learning to play the acoustic guitar that I bought eight years ago, it will cease to be a fake accoutrement of my musical ability and instead be used to serenade a lady around a camp fire; this would be one song that I would learn to play. A simple acoustic song (well, apart from needing the ability to play the harmonica at the same time if performed) that I came across after watching the film Juno; short and sweet, maybe the lyrics are a little too saccharine for some but they tug at the incurable romantic in me. The whole soundtrack is well worth a listen and although this song originally appeared on Barry Louis Polisar‘s album, Old Dogs New Tricks, I prefer the stripped down version used in the opening credits in the film which you can view on YouTube.

Deep is as deep does, down deeper we go, in search of more adjectives to describe it’s deepness but no we can’t and instead just nod our heads sagely, deep in thought and time, d-e-e-e-e-p, and see how many mentions of deep we can get into one long deep sentence. A sublime track with a sound that epitomises deepness, melding with the alpha waves of your brain and taking your mind away…

Deep techno soundscape flavour from the Chicago based producer Steven Hitchell, excuse the authentic vinyl crackles at the beginning, adds a little character anyway. I haven’t got access to my record cleaning machine to run it through at the moment but there appears to be plenty of copies available to buy for yourself. Entices you in with the reverb and echoes then chugs along on an introspective journey.
