Another track as featured on the Dave Lee Disco Mix (see this post), I’ve no doubt that the copy he uses in the mix is the original promo that’s as rare as the proverbial hens teeth, although prices do seem to have come down from the astronomical highs that it was fetching on eBay a few years ago. Luckily for those of us not prepared to mortgage the house for a single record, Rhino Records, a label that specializes in reissues, compilations and anthologies was bought by the Warner Music Group. Since they own the rights to the back catalogue that includes One More Try (amongst other extended disco mixes by Ashford & Simpson, some of which were never commercially released), that’s the most likely the reason why we now have this limited edition box set pressed on 180 gram vinyl. Besides initially indulging in a bit of object fetishism due to it’s (then perceived) scarcity, I’m quite fond of the gradual build up to the point where the song then strips back everything to just an energetic drum breakdown with the bass guitar joining a little later – a justifiably acclaimed composition.
