Trippy Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry production during the same rich period where he produced The Heptones (see this blog post) and enhanced perfectly by the plaintive falsetto of Junior Murvin. A phat 12″ vinyl pressing that begs to be played loud on as big a system as one can muster, so as to get lost in the subtle nuances of Perry’s production techniques.

Released at the end of 2008 however I didn’t get my copy until a couple of months ago; hopefully there’s still some floating around but if you see one, jump on it. Apparently they also come with a cd single of the same tracks, although mine didn’t. Prepare to pay over the odds because it’s a piece of vinyl pressed and released in Japan but worth it for this single track, with the other three left way, way behind. This composition has an exquisite gentleness that makes you forget you’re listening to a four-on-the-floor house track with the off-beat repeated melody. Can’t help but wish it went on for longer, extended to cover a whole side – a soundtrack to dance under a starlit night to, with an approaching dawn infiltrating the blackness on the horizon.

The song originally a hit for Ray Charles (written by Percy Mayfield) but reggae-fied by Big Youth, with his deejay delivery.

If you grew up in the Eighties, this probably got played at the end of your school disco forming the soundtrack to the ritual of The Slow Dance. A ceremonial teenage rite, the scourge of the socially inept and those lacking in enough confidence to approach members of the opposite sex. Apart from that, it’s a fine example of the polished production talents of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, who were the duo behind some of their biggest hits. Call me an old romantic, but hey, I think going to the cinema on a first date like the guy on this track suggests, is a little lame unless purely to cop a feel in the back row. In that case this single would probably be called something quite different.

Marianne Faithfull in full rant mode, dispensing obscenities on the theme of sexual jealously with a ‘new’ voice affected by years of substance abuse. Unsurprisingly, it caused some controversy at the time that included a ban in Australia and a walk out by female packers at the pressing plant; it certainly pulls no punches. However the spoken word/’rap’ lyrics complement the laidback bass and reggae rock stylings.
