Just one track from an accomplished album with perfect production from Daniel Lanois and Tony Mangurian, these are all simply just great songs. My path to discovering the ‘Fever In Fever Out‘ album were the tracks “Naked Eye” and “Under Your Skin” which were, to me, groovy rock tracks with overt dance sensibilities, so it’s perhaps not surprising that this album was released on the Beastie Boys’ Grand Royal record label. ‘Take A Ride’ has a chilled out mellow vibe with complimentary over-dubbed vocal harmonies and a bass that loiters across the track.

The whole album is eminently listenable but this is the track which featured in the 1992 film Strictly Ballroom, catchy lyrics, Day’s perfectly poised singing and some strings, hey, I’m sold. A song that long suffering ladies can play to their commitment-phobe boyfriends who could appease them somewhat, if they could dance to it’s tango rhythm without having two left feet.

My first Italo Disco record – I can now claim entry to the club of European continental groovers. Have put up two versions because I first heard it on a mix by James Bucknell (see this post) and not until I heard it on a different mix with the vocals, was I aware that it’s ‘correct’ speed was 33rpm. However it still sounds equally at home being spun at 45rpm, (albeit pitched down at -8% to keep the bpm reasonably mixable in a house/disco set) reminiscent of tracks by The Human League.

Apologies for the gaps in the recording; either the stream or my computer was playing up and I was a little fatigued from a busy day moving house to bring much of what little intelligence I had to sort it out. Came into the show a little late as well, hence the short first track but enjoy!

This is one low slung end-of-night dirty grinder of a tune; part of me was reluctant to put this up and let this little sleazy secret be discovered. Nestled away on the ‘Drivin’ Hard‘ album, I’m actually stepping on ck’s toes a little as he ‘discovered’ this track but saw sense and traded it with me for some other anonymous twelve that I can’t remember. I’m sure there is another copy out there with his name on it; a crate dig away in the musty corner of a charity shop, amidst really bad secondhand clothes.

Written by the drummer, Roger Odell, the drumming is laid back yet tight, add a dirty keyboard sound, mixed with a bit of vocoder-laden lyrics, add a sprinkle of female backing vocals (provided by Gill Saward and Jackie Raw aka, according to the cover notes, the U.K. Sluts) and you’ve got a bona fide soundtrack to a coke binge, now where’s my mirror…

As a rule I don’t have any compilation albums, quite a few years ago I performed a Stalinist purge on my collection, realising that a) the pressings were usually crap and b) I only really liked a couple of songs on each one anyway. Due to the miracle of t’interweb, the original releases of the tracks I liked were a mere mouse-click and a few additional brass farthings on the credit card away. The husks of the compilations were cast aside to a fate only marginally better than the refuse tip, the charity shop; probably to begin the cycle anew when picked up by some other spotty herbert.

However, for this compilation I grudgingly had to make an exception because the album it’s from is an even quieter pressing and the release on twelve isn’t the same version – I know because I bought them all in an escalating paroxysm of rage and frustration. I’m possibly being a little unfair to this comp because it’s spread across four slabs of vinyl with a max of only three tracks per side and it does have more than two tracks that I like. This is what I bought it for though; dub house, ragga house, don’t really care exactly what label with which to pidgeon-hole it but it’s a bouncy smiling track. I think Jazzy B’s phrase “A happy face, a thumpin’ bass, for a lovin’ race” equally applies here.

DJ Mix: Aybee – The Blakout Podcast #2
14th September, 2008 | 632 views

I’ve always followed Aybee’s output ever since purchasing his ‘Revolution Of 1 EP‘ on his own Deepblak label and his mixes were no exception to my roving ears, hungry for deepness. Since his collaboration with Ron Trent produced the sublime ‘Across The Universe‘ under the guise of Indigenous Space People, his contact with other producers mean his mixes always contain one or two exclusive tracks from CDr that seem to remain unreleased. Download or stream from the mixes section on his website or from his MySpace blog post (Update: he appears to have cancelled his MySpace account).

DJ Mix: James Bucknell – NYC Italo Disco Mix

James Bucknell - NYC Italo Disco Mix

I first came across mixes by James Bucknell on discogs a few years ago and was seduced by his silky smooth mixing skills of tracks that didn’t use drum machines and his long pedigree as a don of dance music that stretches back into the eighties. His breadth of taste and styles shouts loud and clear across all the mixes that I’ve hoovered up from the web to listen to, sometimes even within the mixes themselves. Illustrating a deft touch of choice that epitomizes the maxim that there’s only two types of music, good and bad; he most definitely knows the former. This mix is one of many that had me scrambling for my notebook as I was given a lesson in disco and many a penny was then spent tracking down some of these audio nuggets. He now resides in Sydney and regularly plays out, check out his website for mixes and blog for his latest forays in clubland.
