Haven’t got this on vinyl… yet. When it was first released in the fifties it was on the cusp of the transition of the audio formats between 78rpm shellac and 45rpm single we’re more familiar with. I’m not about to start adding shellac as an additional format to my collection but ebay came to the rescue and it appears it was re-released in the sixties on seven. A copy will be winging it’s way to me shortly but enjoy it here, from where I first heard it, the LA Confidential soundtrack. (**UPDATE** Found a UK seller that had, what I presume, is a re-press on 45rpm from the sixties, near mint condition as well, verrry nice.)
Which is an appropriate place to start because it’s a soundtrack that does exactly the job it’s supposed to, evoking the period of the movie, which it does admirably. It’s also a movie that is thoroughly deserving of the Oscars it won but that’s a song for other movie blogs to sing. Think of smoky exclusive clubs, fifties Hollywood glamour, full bands and a single ravishing blonde singer on stage in front of a microphone that looks like a mini UFO.

Moody rock’n'roll that reached number one in August 1960 in the UK, another favourite of my dad’s and a genuine British rock and roll record. Even if the name of the band and title of the track don’t ring any bells, it has a very well known guitar break. Vibrato is the correct term I believe, “is a musical effect, produced in singing and on musical instruments by a regular pulsating change of pitch”, check out the stream.
